bob can't win - a fragment

by nick nelson

bob was a guy who couldn't win
he couldn't save, and he couldn't sin
all the friends he never had
some were good, but most were bad

he came down from his mountain top
and approached a traffic cop
he asked the officer for directions
and was quickly arrested for his own protection

it was obvious to the law
that bob was a specimen raw
saved from the devastation
that had ravaged civilization

a worthy subject
for a proposed project
to find where humans had gone wrong
and if they could learn to sing a new song

once it had been explained to him
by a friendly technician named tim
bob submitted with hardly a peep
happy to have a warm place to sleep

they stripped bob naked without a stitch
but gave him a ham and cheese sandwich
and began their succession of tests
assuring bob that it was all for the best

bob was happy to be out of the cold
and not be covered with fungus and mold
the sandwich had been quite tasty
and there was no point in being hasty

when they finished poking him and prodding
they took him to a room and a doctor, nodding
gave bob some interrogations
about his current situation

he asked bob if he was satisfied
with his treatment, and bob replied
that he was just an ordinary guy
whose best friends were the clouds and sky

as long as you feed me every day
i have nothing at all to say
and if i have a place to sleep
my thoughts will never run too deep

the doctor by this was mildly perplexed
and decided to give bob some tests
bob returned to his room for a nap -
and on his window heard a tap

what was it that summoned him?
the story at this point grows dim
i hate to leave you in the cold
but some things are best left untold
