carl miller

by nick nelson

carl miller, a deputy administrator, was often stopped on the street by persons asking him, don’t i know you?

and carl would always reply, hey, i was just thinking about you! whether or not he had really been thinking about the person, or even recognized the person or had any idea who they were.

one day a fellow stopped carl and said, don’t i know you!

and carl responded, hey, i was just thinking about you!

really? the man asked. do you know who i am?

why, carl said, i think so -

you think so! you do not know me at all, you lying sack of prevaricating sanctimony! it is people like you are responsible for the miserable state the world is in today.

i beg your pardon, carl replied stiffly. i may have made an honest mistake. and i can not be faulted for that.

the stranger sneered and passed on, leaving carl to his confused thoughts.

the incident haunted carl for a few days, but he recovered and went back to his usual ways.

when people approached him on the street, and said, don’t i know you? he continued to answer as before, hey, i was just thinking about you!

he may be doing it still.
