a letter

by corinne delmonico

i want to be special, i want to be unique
i want to be daring, i want to be a freak
i want to be a rebel, and break all the laws
but most of all i want applause

i want to be different, just a little bit
i want the world to love me and never quit
i want a silver dollar, not a lousy dime
and be remembered until the end of time

another night is ending, here's another day

the world's about its business, i’m just in the way
sidewalk filled with people, i have to move along
so i wrote the world a letter in this song

i only wanted endless fame
and for the world to chant my name
you built me up and threw me down
and all my smiles were met with frowns

dear world i have forgiven you
but i don't want to live in you
you tell me just to move along
but first i write this letter in this song

lonesome highway

by jack dale coody

two old maids in a folding bed
up all night talking out of their head
can’t get to sleep, nowhere to go
hear that lonesome whistle blow

get up in the morning, when the sun don’t shine
haven’t got a nickel, or a lousy dime
papa told mama in the wind and rain
head for the highway, no time too explain

uncle bud is on my trail
wrote a poem in a letter, put it in the mail
excuse me ma’am i’d be much obliged
for a cup of coffee and a slice of pie

please mister judge i got no bail
but i’ll do my time in any jail
i got nowhere else to go
hear that lonesome whistle blow

cucumber

by mary crow fogg

clara watched
amazed as

mrs white
sliced the whole

cucumber
into one

hundred and
twenty-one

perfectly
even slices

and placed them
fanlike on

the patterned
china plate

she then turned
to clara

unsmiling
and said, take

these into
the dining

room and place
them on the

corner of
the table

nearest the
sideboard and

please please try
not to trip

over your
feet and spill

them can you
do that much?
