if humans never came down from the trees
we’d eat apples and bananas and enjoy the breeze
we would never pay taxes or wait for a bus

we could look at the sky and lie in the weeds
lay on our backs and count the clouds
and never say anything nasty out loud
we would never have to talk at all
not about politics, art or football
maybe once in a while hum a little tune
wait for the sunset and gaze at the moon
where, o where, did we go so wrong
this is the burden of my sad song
why did we build these cities and towns
where one or two are up and a million down?
stand in the street, and say we should go back
but turn around, and look down the track
what do you see with your wide open eye?
it might be something, but it’s not you or i
