someone

by bofa xesjum

someone is out there, manfred thought.

perhaps they mean me harm.

if i reman quiet, they might well go away.

i have always done my best to stay out of trouble.

for the most part, my precautions and prayers have been successful.

but the night is dark.

and as silent as the grave, as my old friend reverend jarvis was fond of saying.

what did i expect?

the chances of living forever were never that great.

my best guess is that there is indeed something or someone out there.

i am quite the philosopher tonight.

i think i will stop all this thinking and make myself a sandwich.

as luck would have it, just then there was a knock on the door.

manfred was not a remarkable person.

nor did he regard himself as in any way exceptional.

he emptied his mind of thought and approached the door.

he opened the door and beheld his old friend jeffrey johnson.

just the person he had dreamed of only three nights ago!

manfred opened his mouth to speak, but jeffrey held up an imperious hand.

jeffrey had crossed the ocean for this meeting.

you probably womder what i am thinking, jeffrey addressed manfred.

that happens to be the case, manfred replied.

it is very often the case in such situations as this, jeffrey continued, when the two parties involved have not seen each other for a long time.

do you remember dr holper, the self-professed master of all knowledge? manfred asked. bur here, i am being a poor host, will you not step inside?

but , of course, jeffrey answered. i thought you would never ask.

and with a slight tremor, manfred stood aside to let jeffrey enter the apartment.

young man in a hurry

by dog e relaford

where are you going, young man in a hurry
your face so lined with woe and worry
have you lost your best friend?
is the world about to end?

i am going to london to see the king
for i have terrible news to bring
the end of the world would be a blessing
compared to what i will be attesting

that sounds dreadful - can you spare no clue
or intimate what we might do
to avert this tragedy
whatever it might be

no, the young man replied
we can not hold back the tide
by fate i have been sent
to assert this final testament

in an evil purple hour
the world will turn into a flower
now if you will excuse me
the flower is trying to lose me

of course! the frog exclaimed
you are my old friend king james
you had a bandage on your big toe
when we romped as lads long ago

you were always a worry wart
a melancholy sort
prone to fits of ennui
or so it seemed to me

the frog continued south
with a corncob pipe in its mouth
and the young man headed west
having failed his most important test

sadness

by bofa xesjum

siblings, cried the wuggles
let us stop here a while
surely we will perish
if we go another mile

we have all grown weary
and our ranks are filled with strife
let us stay beside this river
and start a new life

but the muggles would not hear it
and continued on their way
the wuggles saw the sun go down
and waited for the day

thunder rolled across the plain
and rain fell from the sky
the river rose up from its banks
and no wuggle was left dry

one by one the surging waves
carried the wuggles away
their piteous wailings faded
when the juggles came out to play

what if

by dog e relaford

if humans never came down from the trees
we’d eat apples and bananas and enjoy the breeze
we would never pay taxes or wait for a bus
and there would not be so many of us

if humans never planted seeds
we could look at the sky and lie in the weeds
lay on our backs and count the clouds
and never say anything nasty out loud

we would never have to talk at all
not about politics, art or football
maybe once in a while hum a little tune
wait for the sunset and gaze at the moon

where, o where, did we go so wrong
this is the burden of my sad song
why did we build these cities and towns
where one or two are up and a million down?

stand in the street, and say we should go back
but turn around, and look down the track
what do you see with your wide open eye?
it might be something, but it’s not you or i

blue

by nick nelson

i have been alive for two billion seconds
and have thought two billion thoughts
i always thought that i was real
but maybe i was not

i had two trillion sentiments
in the salad of my brain
now they all have disappeared
but may come back again

i saw a dragon waiting
outside the jailhouse entrance
he wanted to be let back in
but he had served his sentence

i saw my old dog blue
standing outside city hall
he offered me a pamphlet
and i threw him a tennis ball

what good times we had together
on the cote d’azur in spring
when the air was filled with breezes
and the butterflies spread their wings

i still have the faded menu
from our last dinner in rome
now blue has no more butterflies
and i am far from home

the bus is waiting at the gate
i have my ticket in my hand
i wish i had the golden dream
that we buried in the sand

passing stranger

by dog e relaford

life is cruel
but nobody cares
they are only concerned
with their own affairs

you see a stranger coming down the road
you think, he looks like a goof
but maybe his best friend ran off with his dog
or he was evicted from under his roof

the stranger passes you by
and you pass him by too
you look up at the sky
and it might be gray or blue

the stranger passes by
you think of him no more
maybe he was the one
who could have told you the score

maybe he was the one
who could have pointed you the way
maybe he was your long lost twin
and like you, had nothing to say

message

by dog e relaford

if my shirt was white
i could sit tight
if my suit was black
i might stay on track

if my shoes were brown
i would get out of town
if my tie was green
i would flee the scene

if the sky is red
i will stay in bed
if the air turns blue
i will know about you

if night turns to day
i have nothing to say
if the sun goes out
i will jump and shout

if i get a message
from a stranger in the night
i will put on my shoes
and tie them real tight
