the little town

by genghis gilgamesh

once there was a little town
where happy children played
and every night the sun went down
and came back the next day

folks went about their business
always with a smile
they never fussed or fought
because that was not their style

the little stars smiled down on them
peaceful and unafraid
and no one ever wandered
and no one ever strayed

no roads led from the little town
for where was there to go?
dogs barked, cats slept, and robins sang
the trees waved to and fro

o little town where are you now
by what were you brought low
was it by thunder and lightning
was it by rain and snow

or was it by demons
lurking in the night
or invading barbarians
fixing for a fight

was it mustache stroking villains
eyeing maidens pure and sweet
or purveyors of mind altering drugs
on the corners of the streets

was it by evil women
tempting innocent men
was it by greedy speculators
making twenties out of tens

oh i am but a sinner
and certainly no saint
but i wish i could find the office
to file my complaint
