the end of the road

by genghis gilgamesh

two humans named joe were walking down the road.

they had come a long way and still had a long way to go.

they had started out with an equal amount of provisions in their knapsacks and bottles.

the first human, named joe saturday, had had a knapsack filled with beef jerky and a 24 ounce bottle of water.

the second human, named joe monday, had had a knapsack filled with jars of caviar and a 24 ounce bottle of champagne.

joe saturday's knapsack and bottle were almost empty.

joe monday’s knapsack and bottle were still about 80 percent full.

joe saturday was thinking of murdering joe monday.

joe monday was afraid of being murdered by joe saturday.

that was just the way it was.

it was the old army game.

you pay your money and you take your choice.

the two joes came to a bend in the road.

when they went around the bend they saw a mountain in the distance.

but a wide river crossed their path.

how were they to get across the river? they wondered,

joe saturday proposed cutting down some trees and building a raft to cross the river.

joe monday countered by proposing that they gather rocks and build a bridge over the river with the rocks.

they could not see any trees, nor any rocks.

they had not seen any trees, or any rocks, since starting out on their journey.

they argued through what was left of the afternoon and into the night, joe saturday for the raft, and joe monday for the bridge.

when the sun came up over the mountain, they were still arguing.
