the invitation

by horace p sternwall

what is that fellow doing here?

i invited him.

invited him? whatever for?

he has some experience of proceedings such as this.

you do not say so. and you did not see fit to inform me that you had invited him?

i did not think it was important.

then you must not think the proceedings themselves are important.

and with that, jamison left the room and the building.

*

where is jamison?

he left.

get him back, we can’t start the proceedings without him. spare no expense, leave no stone unturned until you find him.

*

have you seen a fellow pass this way?

what sort of fellow?

the sort of fellow you see every day,

can you describe him a bit more exactly than that?

i am afraid i can not.

what was his name?

jamison.

is that spelled j-a-m-i-s-o-n , or j-a-m -i-e-s-o-n?

j-a-m-i-s-o-n.

no, i have not seen him. what was he wearing?

what a chap like him would be wearing.

was he wearing a hat?

of course he was wearing a hat! and carrying a cane. look here, i haven’t time for this foolishness. good day.

*

jamison was never found, from that day to this. obviously, otherwise i would not be telling you all this.

*

what do you think the disappearance of jamison tells us about the current state of affairs?

everything, unfortunately.

i quite agree.

*

as for kendall, the chap whose invitation to the proceedings had caused jamison to abandon them, and who might have been expected to shed some light on the matter, he has never been found either.
