stagecoach, or the american night

by horace p sternwall

adam had an apple
eve had a berry
they bought a ticket to new jersey
and crossed on the ferry

the snake awoke at midnight
adam and eve were gone
he wished he had a bigger head
to put his hat upon

adam took the stagecoach
eve caught the express
adam wore an old straw hat
eve wore a purple dress

the snake took down a case
and put his suit inside it
he heard a lonesome freight train cry
and wished that he could ride it

the stagecoach crossed a wooden bridge
and vanished in the mist
the farmer’s daughter watched it go
and crossed it off her list

the snake stood on the corner
and called a yellow cab
he had a list of enemies
but not the gift of gab

the express pulled into frisco
ahead of the monsoon
eve checked into the hilton
and said wake me up at noon

the night began to laugh and shake
and swallowed them all up
it poured itself a cup of tea
and stared into the cup
