i hear a symphony

by fred flynn

it’s a nice day out.

really? who says?

the news.

you believe the news? that is just what they want you to think.

cone on, let’s go outside.

go outside! that is just what thet want you to do.

this is it - our one day of the year. if you don’t go now you will have to wait another year at least. there is a bill in congress and they might change it to two years.

there is no congress. that is just a made up thing, like everything else on the news.

whatever. we can go outside today. i checked and the elevator has its green light on. one day a year. maybe your last chance.

i don’t want to go outside. it is just a trick - to get us where they can get us.

what have you got better to do?

i am working on my symphony.

you have all year to work on your symphony.

i am at a crisis. i can’t leave it now.

eddie went outside on his day last week.

eddie says he went outside on his day last week. that is what they told him to say.

you know what he got when he went outside?

you mean what he says he got when he went outside.

an apple,

an apple?

a real apple from a tree that they grew in the ground.

in the ground?

yes, in the dirt. in real dirt.

oh, that is so gross! that is disgusting… just disgusting. it would be even more disgustng if it were true.

he says he liked it.

he would say that.

so you don’t want to go outside?

no, i want to work on my symphony.

i don’t suppose you want me to bring you back an apple. or a banana.

oh yuck! just go, go, get away from me.
