oliver

by nick nelson

i was asked to say a few words about oliver.

this was after the meteor was predicted.

oliver was the greatest. he ruled the street like a king.

he could sell some bonds. and some stocks, too, if he had to.

he always had a smile on his face, even though half the time it was a mean one.

you didn't want to cross him, or get on his bad side.

but he knew how to have a good time, after he took care of business.

and he knew how to go about his business.

he never paid much attention to me, any more than anybody else did.

a lot of people gave up when the meteor appeared.

even oliver, sort of. pretty much.

but i didn’t.

i ended up winning the prize, even though nobody really cared any more.

i went down to the dining room on the big day.

one thing that never changed, even through everything, the firm still had the best blueberry muffins on the street.

i was just helping myself to a couple of them, when i heard harley and his guys coming down the corridor.

i just had time to get my raccoon coat off the table before they came in.

the ceremony was nice. harley probably wasn’t too thrilled to have to go through with it, but he put on a happy face.

they all talked about oliver, when they weren’t talking about the meteor.

i had to say something.

in the end i just said that oliver was the wildest craziest guy i ever knew, and i would miss him.
