the house behind the cornfield

by horace p sternwall

uncle walt had stories to tell
cousin vincent had a painting to sell
little polly fell under a spell
but they expected it all would turn out well

suddenly walt had nothing to say
vincent could come back some other day
poor polly woke up with a start
and realized they all were playing a part

grandma appeared in the doorway serene
her apron was white and spotlessly clean
her spectacles sparkled and her gray hair was wavy
because it was time for dumplings and gravy

those days are gone without a trace
when everybody knew their place
the hired man worked for room and board
and grandpa carved the turkey with a flaming sword

when the meal was over they all dispersed
because they were under an ancient curse
only aunt yolanda was left behind
because nobody ever paid her no mind
