the misanthrope

by genghis gilgamesh

do you remember eddie smith?
he was hard to deal with
but not as much as al jones
who was always on the speakerphone

don’t get me started on mike o’toole
who was the antithesis of cool
or betsy harris with her little smile
i am glad she has gone out of style

or vinnie king with his yellow ties
who always made my gorge rise
or lulu goldberg with her perpetual sneer
which got worse with every passing year

and those were just folks like you and me
the sorry scraps of humanity
when i really get upset
is when i think of the smart set

i guess i will never learn
to love people with money to burn
would it be such a crime
to throw me and you a lousy dime?

on and on and on i could go
through the wind and rain and snow
maybe you think i am being cold
but on the human race i have never been sold

the world would be a better place
if cats or dogs were the dominant race
or spiders or gila monsters or horses
the world might take a smoother course

i could go on in this vein
if i thought you might feel my pain
we will meet again in the bottomless pit
all we ingrates, clods, and hypocrites
