i rode into town

by horace p sternwall

i rode into town
with a puzzled frown
and got off my horse
as a matter of course

i addressed the congregation
of unaligned nations
with a smile on my face
for the whole human race

president jones
in sepuchral tones
offered me a loan
to bury my bones

and reverend smith
who i was never friends with
with a kindly smile
said i could stay a while

and mother brown
with her golden crown
gave her head a shake
and baked me a cake

but mayor black
got them back on track
and in great detail
told us we had all failed

and wished we were in bed
all cookies have crumbs
and we were just bums

there was nothing left to say
so i went on my way
if tomorrow is better
i will write you a letter
