conqueror

by horace p sternwall

when the party broke up
the conqueror took his leave
with a dollar in his pocket
and an ace up his sleeve

at the bottom of the driveway
he met a greek bearing gifts
the greek drove an aston martin
and offered the conqueror a lift

as they drove down the highway
the rain began to fall
i say, exclaimed the greek
let’s pay the butler a call

the butler had retired
after a lifetime of service
he called himself st basil
but his real name was purvis

wind blew the chimes
as rain fell on the sea
the greek and the conqueror
were just in time for tea

the maid brought crumpets
wearing a sword at her hip
they looked out at the water
and beheld a white ship

the ship was commanded
by blackbeard himself
who was not a unicorn
nor was he an elf

the guests were lrounded up
in gold and silver chains
the white ship vanished in the fog
and was never seen again
