bill bailey was on his way home
walking down a dark and twisted road
when he saw an apple
fall from a tree
the tree was some distance
from the dark and twisted road
but bill
after some hesitation
decided to plunge into the undergrowth
and retrieve it
thinking he might take it to market
in the morning
and sell it
for a few pennies
after a good night’s sleep
and some sweet dreams
but it was not to be
no sooner had poor bill
put his left foot into the thick green undergrowth
than he felt something
coil around his misbegotten ankle
suddenly
he was on his back
and being dragged away to -
later
just before the break of day
jesse james came a-walking
down the selfsame dark
and twisted road
the apple had not yet climbed back in the tree
so jesse
whistling a happy tune
passed by unconcernedly
on his way to the market
where he was greeted
by mother hubbard
who sold him a cabbage
as the sun came up
and they both lived
to see another day
meanwhile
the apple back on the tree
and the serpent back in the grass
waited for the night
and their next victiim
o wanderer on this earth
