on november 2, 11456 bc, the first king, abced , and the first priest, efghi, put their heads together and invented civilization.
it was a dark day for the human race, for planet earth, and for the universe.
let’s do it, efghi said to abced.
they got up and went over to a tree under which jaclum and nopqu were sitting, sharing a pomegranate which jaclum had knocked off a tall tree by skillfully throwing a stick at it.
abced and efghi took seats on the ground beside jaclum and nopqu.
would you care for a chunk of this tasty pomegranate? jaclum asked abced and efghi.
no thank you, abced replied politely. i have had my fill today. but it was kind of you to ask.
i, too, have had my fill, efghi added.
i am happy that the great mother has provided for you, nopqu said.
what then can we do for you? jaclum asked abced and efghi.
i have a suggestion, abced began carefully.
i am listening, jaclum replied.
the seeds of the pomegranate, as you know, when they fall on the ground, cause new pomegranate trees to sprout.
of course they do, jaclum agreed. every child knows that, praise be to the great mother. that is, of course, if brother wind and sister rain are agreeable.
but listen to my suggestion, abced persisted.
i am listening.
what if, instead of waiting on brother wind and sister rain, one of us was to place the seed underground ourself, and then make sure that the ground was watered every day to make the seed grow.
but how would we do that? nopqu asked.
by bringing water from sister river.
but sister river’s water goes whither she goes.
and besides, jaclum added, to do such a thing would require to stay in one spot for a great time. and the great mother has told us, her children, to wander over her like brother wind and sister rain.
abced shrugged. it was just a thought. think about it.
dream on it, efghi added.
abced nodded to efghi, and they got up and left jaclum and nopqu to their thoughts.
i do not know that we accomplished much, efghi said when he and abced were out of the hearing of jaclum and nopqu.
patience, brother, abced advised. we planted the seed, that is enough for now.
but we did not even bring up the great mother speaking to me directly.
abced smiled. that will come later, brother. much later. patience, patience.
