x

by dog e relaford

x lived in a house on a hill
with a hundred servants to do her will
she had a gardener with rakes of steel
and a bodyguard whose devotion was real

x had a room with a lovely view
and lived on watercress and tofu
but in case her guests craved more solid fare
an army of cooks lived under the stairs

an army of cooks, serving flotillas of beef
on oceans of ale, cascading without relief
mountains of potatoes, endless plains of corn on the cob
the cooks were always on the job

sometimes the house was strangely quiet
international investors queried about buying it
but x would not be imposed upon
and sat on the front porch looking out at the lawn

the lawn was inhabited by rabbits
who were creatures of habit
the biggest rabbit was named roy
he was quite a boy

the gardener’s name was jim
you couldn’t get anything past him
roy caused him a lot of grief
but they respected each other’s beliefs

there was also a little pond
out in the back of beyond
in the pond lived a frog named jules
who was nobody’s fool

one day x was asleep in her chair
and suddenly she was not there
the bodyguard, who was called big john
thought it was some kind of con

with no one left to pay the bills
that was the end of the house on the hill
now it is covered with purple weeds
proliferating like rosary beads
