a cautionary tale

by dog e relaford

there was a guy named joe
who had nowhere to go
he had a friend named ben
who always counted to ten

joe had a wife named jill
who bent hm to her will
ben had a girl friend named pet
who sometimes put down a bet

joe and ben were on a mission
on the weekends to go fishing
jill and pet would go shopping
and then bar hopping

they met a guy named harry
and his twin brother larry
they were a pair of operators
hip to the scene and up to daters

they had a scheme that sounded funny
for jill and pet to make easy money
jill was dubious
and thought, what rubes are us?

pet was willing to listen
her eyeballs glowingly glistened
as harry and larry
with their spiel away got carried

jill was not so gullible
she thought the plan was nullible
the old army game
which was a darn shame

harry and larry’s persistance
wore down the gals’ resistance
they climbed into larry’s pontiac
on a fateful mission to hell and back

they headed down the highway black
and passed neither penthouse nor shack
jill and pet had second thoughts
but in a web of doom they were caught

where did they go?
perhaps it is better not to know
and not wallow in the sordid details
but not in the first place to go off the rails

this is the story not of jill and pet
but of the whole human race, don’t forget
when something is offered you for free
you are not where you want to be

stay in your homes when the sun goes down
resist the temptation to go to town
predators and monsters await
and you are only the bait
