floe

by bofa xesjum

i never thought it would come to this, zane thought dolefully as the ice floe drifted further and further from the mainland.

he was aware of jesperson eyeing him balefully.

how do you like your great blueprint for civilization now? jesoerson sneered.

i say, that is quite enough of that, quigley interspersed. i think the time for recriminations has passed.

on the further edge of the floe, mrs potter sorrowfully stroked her pet otter.

young mrs yarborough maintained her steely composure. but her smart little hat seemed curiously out of place.

despite it all, none of the party had as yet murdered any of the others.

though it had been a very near thing.

down through the ages wise men had prophesied doom if the human race did not mend its ways.

still, no one had ever thought it would end in quite the way that it had.

professor harcourt’s version of events had received the most votes.

but a vociferous minority had held out until the bitter end.

now, as night fell over the cold empty waters, young mrs yarborough began making her way around the edge of the floe.

out in the darkness, a strange mumbling was heard.

zane pulled his greatcoat tighter around himself.

the castaways felt something stirring under the ice.

mrs yarborough crept up softly behind jesperson.

the time for kind words and measured deeds had passed.

just as mrs yarborough pulled a length of silken cord from her embroidered mackintosh, jesperson woke up.

quigley coughed discreetly..

i thnk it behooves us all, to make a final determination as to what happened and why, jesperson maintained stoutly.

i suppose we must leave some sort of testament , zane agreed wearily, even if there will be no one to read it.

ha ha ha, cried a voice from out in the darkness.

this is insupportable! montclair exclaimed, breaking his silence.

we could pull harder, jesperson maintained, if only we had some oars!

young mrs yarborough began laughing.

but the green eyes appearing out of the darkness had something besides laughter in their depths…
