women wore flowers in their hats
men smoked cigars
you could walk at night in the city
and see the stars

you could say howdy to a stranger
and get a big smile
and folks would not even laugh at you
if your shoes were out of style

dogs ran without leashes
cats climbed trees
firemen got them down again
as easy as you please

old folks were respected
children were taught to behave
everybody knew their place
from the cradle to the grave

children played in the street
and nobody got hurt
everybody chuckled
when a breeze caught a pretty girl’s skirt

officer riley grabbed an apple
from mr guido’s store
you could give a guy a hotfoot
and he’d laugh, and not get sore

did that world really exist
or was it all just a mirage?
is that a space ship or a mule
in the garage?

where we are headed
no one can say
but we can always dream
of the good old days
