clyde

by horace p sternwall

i had a friend
his name was clyde
his toes were small
but his ears were wide

he liked his coffee hot
and his catfish fried
when the sun went down
he had nowhere to hide

o clyde, o clyde
we may meet again on the other side
i remember the day when your dog died
you sat on the sidewalk like a bluebird and cried

clyde had a wife
her name was sue
her elbows were red
and her eyes were blue

clyde had a dog
his name was yellow
if he’d been a human
he’d have been a good fellow

clyde had a boss
his name was joe
he walked in the rain
but took a train in the snow

clyde sat in a chair
in his later years
the clouds rolled by
but he was full of good cheer

they buried poor clyde
on a rainy day
the preacher gave it his best
but had little to say
