memphis at midnight

by bofa xesjum

after the ball was over, delilah escaped to the frozen garden.

the ______ was waiting for her under the old apple tree.

the same old apple tree that delilah’s grandmother had been hanged from forty years earlier.

delilah rushed into the ______ ’s arms.

my love, she whispered, we are together at last. this is the moment i have waited all my life for.

but the _______ seemed strangely cold and indifferent, and did not return delilah’s passion.

something has come up, the ___________ said tersely.

but what? delilah cried.

i have to be in memphis at midnight. the bus leaves in fifteen minutes. i have barely time to get to the station.

but why? why? what is so important that you have to be in memphis at midnight?

i have to buy my poor dog a bone.

but, delilah gasped tearfully, can’t somebody else buy the poor dog a bone?

no. it is a delicate operation. and orders are that only i can do the deed.

orders? whose orders?

that is a question you must never ask..

and with that, the —————— was gone.

delilah left the garden and returned to the ballroom in a daze.

the ballroom was still lit up. none of the guests had departed.

the king, her betrothed, was waiting for her.

delilah and the king were to be married in the morning, down by the river.

the same river where delilah had been found floating as an infant, nineteen years before.

feeling better, darling? the king asked.

yes, i just - needed some fresh air.

the king smiled, and took delilah by the arm.

i have someone i want you to meet, the king said. do you like surprises?

i love surprises, delilah replied.
